This is the first review I’ve ever written for an Amazon product, but I felt compelled to write one because of how much I appreciate this book!I just completed my 10th year of teaching high school English and turned to this book because I was looking for new ways to get my students as passionate about literature as I am. Recently, some of my students complained about the books we read being boring and my assignments feeling Iike busy-work, even though I’m always careful to avoid busy-work (or at least my definition of it) and instead encourage critical thinking through student-centered learning activities. Clearly I needed to switch things up a bit! This is the best book I’ve ever read on English Language Arts instruction. Sacks’ philosophy is apparent but she doesn’t stay in the nebulous philosophical realm for too long, to the point of the reader wondering how to implement the philosophy in the classroom. This is a detailed account of her practices with sample handouts and student work. I feel so relieved to have this new system of teaching English as we near the start to the year with the chaos of covid and a hybrid teaching model. I can’t imagine a more inspiring, motivating framework for teaching English. Now more than ever, students need choice and flexibility and the opportunity to ENJOY reading!!! This book will teach you how to get them there. Although Sacks teaches middle school, I see nearly all of her methods transferring seamlessly into high school classrooms. I’m so grateful for this book and will gift it to every new English teacher looking for guidance!!!
